Mordor and Gondor - War of the Ring

Rangers spring and ambush on Warg riders

One of the great things about having a wargames room of some form is the ability to have games on the go left "in situ" so that they can be returned to easily when time is at hand.

Despite my very busy recent schedule work-wise my two sons have re-discovered an excellent set of rules that we very much enjoy whenever they come out.

This is a great game system

Games Workshop have released some brilliant games over the years.  Bloodbowl and Spacehulk are two wonderful game systems which I still enjoy and look the part and in doing so, mark off two very important criteria in whether I stay with a game.

"War of the Ring" is another that pushes all the buttons for me.  A wonderful game set in a favourite genre for me which has all the elements of grand scale heroism, epic feats and wonderful figures.  To make it even better, the rules are so much fun to play.

A view across the field of battle - those trolls look menacing!

The Perry twins really did a magnificent job on this range

Both my boys enjoy the entire Lord of the Rings epoch from the books, films and now our wonderful combined collection of WOTR figures.

Lovely close up - good job on painting this Lev!

The Witch King decides to leave his ride in the garage and march with some armoured orcs.

The lads have so far being playing some spirited, dare I say it, "extremely competitive" games upstairs whenever a gap in homework, training, dinner and chores around the house allow.  Here a few happy snaps of a game played a week or so ago.  It is a great opportunity to show off a really wonderfully sculpted range of figures and so very much in the style which I imagined when I first read the Lord of the Rings all those years ago.

Always love seeing the boys having a game away and enjoying a wonderful hobby and not being beholden to the constant draw of electronics.

Wonderful stuff!

    1. Hi Graham. Thanks for your comments and you are 100% right, the miniatures are sensational and the fame system is so wonderfully flavoured with the LOTR Milleieu. Love the fact the boys are playing and looking forward to my next game of it.

  2. Nice looking game Carlo. I played a game with Scott a couple of years back and really enjoyed the system as well.

  3. I don't game the mythos or the system, but the figures are far above the standard of the current WH stuff (and beautifully painted), and it's good to hear that they have actually produced some decent rules as well! :-)

  4. That all looks fantastic Carlo. LOTR has always been an inspiration for me. I think its time to indulge in the passion. Do the figs come with the game or are they from elsewhere?

    1. Hi WB,

The War of the Ring rules are a stand alone set. These figures were an accumulation of figures from eBay, local chaos selling off etc. DPS in Hong Kong did most of the painting - thry are truly superb for this type of fantasy painting.

  5. Grand scenes in the Tolkein tradition.

I must admit that I didn't go anywhere near the game at least partially because of price - I'm such a cheap git - and because I didn't trust GW to still be supporting the game after a few years. A quick visit to the GW website later and it looks like Lord of the Rings is still being supported BUT the pricing sure did make my eyes water.

Be that as it may it's wonderful that the Carlo Clan enjoys their Lord of the Rings gaming. All power to that.

    1. Thank you Peter - the clan is certainly enjoying the game system but you are right, GW pricing is soooooo ugly!!! The boys are very much into the whole Tolkein/ Jackson milieu at present so a trip to NZ next year is on the cards!!

    2. A trip to NZ encompassing Tolkein / Jackson sights / sites. Well certainly that must mean a trip to Wellington where Jackson is based and his Weta Cave - http://wetaworkshop.com/visit-us/the-weta-cave/ - is domiciled.

Conveniently Wellington is the general area from which this comment is being broadcast. You must get in touch should you be, or expect to be, in Wellington.
