The “Great Game” begins

The board is set and the campaign is about to begin

Most of you will recognise the board game in the picture above. Diplomacy is a game I first played as a schoolboy in a Year 11 at school many years ago. We were studying history as a main subject at the College and the intrigues of the early 20th century politics of Europe were fascinating.

President Simon if the NWS suggested a “Play be Email” campaign for few of us who correspond. All seven nations are being played by individuals however we do not know who is who. Simon is also umpiring so all diplomatic messages and moves are being controlled by him.  At the end of the game the great reveal will occur so we can see finally who the backstabbing bastard was who screwed our foreign policy strategy in the Spring moves of 1904!

This should be tremendous fun.

  1. Great fun but why not just use an online system like Backstabbr for Simon can also play? That's what we're doing.

    1. Hi Millsy and thanks for the comments. Mate I had no idea Backstabbr even existed so I will have to investigate that. Loved your comment on the chickens on Big Red Bats blog. I'm still chuckling now mate!

  2. Diplomacy is certainly a classic, and well suited to this kind of play!
That's the first I've seen this version of the board; my own copy has to be at least 45 years old!

    1. Absolutely Peter and especially good for passing the time without the face to face contact of normal club nights. Yes this board was one I grabbed a few years ago in an effort to start the slow immersion of European political and military intrigue into my sons. It worked! Metal pieces which are quite nice. I still have my old large rectangular purple/magenta box with wooden rods as fleets and armies circa 1960's!
