Yes indeed folks…yes indeed.

This is where I should have called time… |
Great game of To the Strongest where a Jeff C and his Pyrric army decided to once again terrorise Rome, this time at the NWS club room at North Perth. Jeff has written extensively about Pyrrhus and his book is absolutely superb. In fact he actually assisted Simon, alongside legend Jeff Jonas, in putting this list together.
Me on the other hand, love history and have still got my High School History file from circa 1983 as I enjoyed the subject and my great teacher Mr Dave Healey. His New York accent was distinctive however his love of History was infectious!

Hey 80% isn’t too shabby. I’ve kept this for potential memoirs and future publishing. Don’t judge…I loved history😂 |
However, I digress…

Pyrrhus himself leads his bodyguard cavalry into the Roman right |
|
The Roman lines await the assault |
|
Gees those lads moved up pretty quickly! |
|
Looking reasonably calm in the lines …YOU FOOLS! |
|
Sorry that this is out of order as blogger does have a mind of its own at times |
|
Brave Velites find themselves in a Forrest of pikes |
|
The Roman lines are starting to panic as hit upon hit is telling, few blows are returned and the saves not made. Almost without raising a sweat Pyrrhus is nearing victory. |
|
Cavalry wondering why the view in the centre is much less pleasant than the flanks |
So at this point tears of despair start to limit my ability to record the battle for further posterity. The Senate would not need further evidence that Consul Carlo may need to pensioned off to work the plough on his old farm outside Capua. Jeff played a superb game and my errors of deployment at the start, especially having my cavalry away from the wings and in the centre, would prove fatal.

I thought I ordered all scribes to be silenced so the disaster could be swept under the carpet. Damned Investigative Frog! |
As always the game was incredible fun and a rematch is already organised for a fortnight at the club.
You enjoyed yourself far too much with this write-up Carlo!
ReplyDeleteMost enjoyable reading it was too. Even if the game did not go as you would have liked and the victory was not Pyrrhic at all.
Regards, James
Thanks Fish and greatly appreciated. It was a bit of fun putting this together mate and playing Jeff is always a pleasure.
DeleteA fun-looking game, and a belated congratulations on the podcast as well.
ReplyDeleteGreat fun game Lawrence and thanks do much for your kind comments.
DeletePyrrhus and the Romans have squared off on my table several times this year as well! Was Pyrrhus played as a Great Leader?
ReplyDeleteYes he was Peter and he did well without too much need for extra redraws. It was very ugly mate.
DeletePyrrhus attached to his elite cavalry can be a royal pain in the butt, esp[ecially if he survives into the later portion of the game!
DeleteEveryone loves the muppets. Least everyone who is a good person at heart. 😀
ReplyDeleteNice looking game of TTS. Though I though Pyrus was supposed to just barely win?
Love muppet time Stew - always the best in my book as well. Yes Pyrrhus was certainly outstanding on this night that’s for sure. Have you tried these rules yet?
DeleteNah. No grid and no time and I still don’t really understand how the camps work. But sometime I’m sure. 😀
DeleteThe grid is good. You’ll like the grid. Saves time. The camps are a great as they do alter strategy as the must be accounted for and a wily enemy will attack them.
DeleteThe fancy matts like Carlo has are nice, but really, you can make your own really cheaply in a variety of different ways. There are several examples on my blog.
DeleteTtS has become my go to set for 25mm Ancients (all vintage Hinchliffe Hellenistic's with a few other mixed in) and has breathed new life into my armies which ad seen little action for some time before these rules revived them. Bizarrely we still play DBM with 15mm for bigger battles but often as chit games which are always enjoyable.
ReplyDeleteRob we were exactly the same. Masses of 28mm ancient armies that went onto mothballs with the demise of WAB. TTS has really invigorated ancients again at the club and we are about to start a campaign based on the Punic Wars with seven players.
DeleteI had the same experience too, of course. My 30 and 40 year old ancient armies have seen major additions! Same for the ECW.
DeleteI imagine you will be telling us more about this Campaign, Carlo?
Will everyone be Roman or Carthaginian, or will there be other players (Iberians, Gauls, Macedonians, Samnites all come to mind!)
The Punic Wars are a great subject - it was my first ever campaign (just a set of linked games) before I even had my first army so we played with cardboard bases with no figures on them. With a few additions my Hellenistics would be able to field a passable Carthaginian army but I would pretty much be starting from scratch with the Romans. This and the lack of Republican figures in the Hinchliffe ranges is a strong deterrent - do you know of any range that matches the Hinchliffe style?
DeleteI think Newl Line designs might fit the bill. Very nice figures with a clean sculpting style, not bulky, and they gave a 20% off sale late December into January each year.

"have"
DeleteI certainly will Peter and Rob. We will have an umpire running the campaign moves etc. and full details still need to be supplied as well as maps and lists. Next week I believe is the big briefing.
DeleteYes the Newline figures would be a very nice match.
DeleteGreat looking game. Bad luck for the Romans. But as the Carthaginians and everyone else found out, the Romans always come back for another go. 😊
ReplyDeleteThanks very much Ben. The Romans are a bit like a bad penny. They always dhow up again!
DeleteDon't despair Carlo.....there's lots more Roman armies where that one comes from..Just ask Polybius. Great post.
ReplyDeleteI think revenge could be just around the corner John. Glad you enjoyed the post mate.
